The Start of Something New

It’s hard to know just where to begin. When you’ve been doing something for a while, and then suddenly have to figure out how it all began, it doesn’t seem easy. But I guess it’s best to start with who we are, and why we’re writing this.

We’re a pair of sisters from Bangalore, India. We have been doing a lot of arty-crafty stuff for as long as we can remember, from art and pottery classes, to fiddling with fish-wire for craft projects in school, to making cards for everyone on every occasion! But somehow, early last year, it seemed like the right time to create something together – to take our shared love for making things, and do something with it. So, with a lot of encouragement from family and friends, Fire & Rain was born.

We started off as a mish-mash of everything. My sister, who paints beautifully, painted everything that would stay still long enough – from canvas, to shirts and sneakers, to her wall. She created bags and tie-dye cushion covers. She discovered a love for micro-macrame, which led to her creating gorgeous pieces of jewellery. I found that I loved wire and beads, and resumed dabbling in calligraphy. We created a Facebook page, we went to a couple of flea markets, and started giving our friends and family hand-made gifts!

Fire & Rain turned a year old on March 15th, 2013. In that year, we’ve learned new techniques and skills, we’ve sold some pieces that we’d fallen in love with and secretly hoped to keep, and we’ve gained new friends and supporters. We’ve come so far, and had so much fun on this journey that we wanted to share it with more people (read: everyone!).

Hence, this blog. Our Facebook page is great, and we love the way it’s grown, but we wanted to share a little more about us, and what’s important to us, with you. Here, we have the space to discuss things with you – be it our experiences at a flea market or our go-to items for jewellery making – and also talk about techniques and show you how you can use them in projects. We plan to update our blog on a M-W-F schedule, and we’re hoping you have fun on this little trip with us!
